VLAN and Switch differences

Subnet - is a range of IP addresses determined by part of an address (often called the network address) and a subnet mask (netmask). For example, if the netmask is 255.255.255.0 (or /24 for short), and the network address is 192.168.10.0, then that defines a range of IP addresses 192.168.10.0 through 192.168.10.255. Shorthand for writing that is 192.168.10.0/24.
VLAN - A good way to think of this is “switch partitioning.” Let’s say you have an 8 port switch that is VLAN-able.

What is a Virtual Machine

A collection of virtual hardware that creates a standard x86 or x64 enviornment that allows for the installation of a supported guest operating system.
A virtual machine is a software computer that, like a physical computer, runs an operating system and applications. The virtual machine is comprised of a set of specification and configuration files and is backed by the physical resources of a host. Every virtual machine has virtual devices that provide the same functionality as physical hardware and have additional benefits in terms of portability, manageability, and security.

A LAN is a local area network and is defined as all devices in the same broadcast domain. If you remember, routers stop broadcasts, switches just forward them.
What is a VLAN? vlan is a logical configuration of a network on switch port to segment IP traffic. Using vLans reduce h/w needs by allowing a switch to segment IP traffic into multiple IP subnets on a port by port configuration.

What is Thin Provisioning

Thin provisioning (TP) is a method of optimizing the efficiency with which the available space is utilized in storage area networks (SAN). TP operates by allocating disk storage space in a flexible manner among multiple users, based on the minimum space required by each user at any given time.
In the conventional storage provisioning model, also known as fat provisioning (FP), storage space is allocated beyond current needs, in anticipation of growing need and increased data complexity.

What is VDI? VDI stands for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, using software to virtualize desktops, then deliver that user experience centrally. Instead of users storing their OS, desktop personality and data on individual laptops or desktops, VDI enables desktop data to run centrally on servers maintained by IT admins, and just accessed locally via a traditional PC or a thin client (a network-connected device designed to access VDI images remotely).
Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is the practice of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine (VM) running on a centralized server.

Desktop Virtualization

Desktop virtualization, often called client virtualization, is a virtualization technology used to separate a computer desktop environment from the physical computer. Desktop virtualization is considered a type of client-server computing model because the “virtualized” desktop is stored on a centralized, or remote, server and not the physical machine being virtualized.
Desktop virtualization “virtualizes desktop computers” and these virtual desktop environments are “served” to users on the network. You interact with a virtual desktop in the same way you would use a physical desktop.

Server virtualization

Server virtualization is the partitioning of a physical server into smaller virtual servers to help maximize your server resources. In server virtualization the resources of the server itself are hidden, or masked, from users, and software is used to divide the physical server into multiple virtual environments, called virtual or private servers. This is in contrast to dedicating one server to a single application or task.
Note: Hardware virtualization, which is also known as server virtualization or simply virtualization, is the abstraction of computing resources from the software that uses those resources.
