Installing and Removing the Virtual Desktop Agent

The Virtual Desktop Agent has to be present on the virtual machines (VMs) to which your users will be connecting. It enables the machines to register with controllers and manages the HDX connection between the machines and the user devices. If you are using XenDesktop or Provisioning services to provision VMs, you need to install and configure the Virtual Desktop Agent only once, but if you are using separate stand-alone virtual or physical machines you must install it on each of the machines so they can register with the controller to allow user connections.

XenDesktop Policy Information

You can use multiple policies to customize XenApp to meet users’ needs based on their job functions, geographic locations, or connection types. For example, for security reasons you may need to place restrictions on user groups who regularly work with highly sensitive data. You can create a policy that requires a high level of encryption for sessions and prevents users from saving sensitive files on their local client drives. However, if some people in the user group do need access to their local drives, you can create another policy for only those users.

Desktop Groups

Desktop groups are sets of virtual machines allocated to users and user groups. Full and assignment administrators can create desktop groups from the catalogs previously generated using the Create Catalog wizard. Desktop groups are listed in Desktop Studio under the Assignments node. In addition to the total number of machines in each group, the number of available and in-use machines is shown; the number of unavailable and offline machines is not shown.

Hypervisor

Client Hypervisor A client hypervisor is a hypervisor that resides on a laptop, PC or other client device. A hypervisor is a program that allows multiple operating systems to share a single hardware host. Normally all the Type2 hypervisors come under Client Hypervisor category. A hypervisor comes in one of two forms: a bare-metal hypervisor, also known as Type 1; or a hosted hypervisor, also known as Type 2. There are important differences between a hosted and bare-metal virtualization hypervisor, and each has pretty specific use cases.

Reset the admin password for Citrix Licensing Server

Sometimes the Citrix licensing server doesn’t get accessed for a long time, maybe the admin leaves and is replaced and no-one made a note of the password. Suddenly, you can’t access the licensing server any more. What to do ? If you have access to the disk sub system (ie.. the files) on the licensing server then it is possible to reset the admin password. 1. Open the “server.xml” file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\Licensing\LS\conf.

What's new in XenDesktop 5.6

What’s New in XenDesktop 5.6 XenDesktop 5.6 includes the following new features and enhancements: Personal vDisk - This feature is a personalization solution for virtual desktops. Two new types of catalog allow you to preserve the assignment of users to desktops even when the disk is cleaned at restart; the same user is assigned the same desktop for later sessions. The new catalogs are pooled with personal vDisk (for pooled-static virtual desktops) that you manage with Desktop Studio andstreamed with personal vDisk that you manage with Provisioning Services.

WinRM for XenDesktop

Windows Remote Management (WinRM) is the Microsoft implementation of WS-Management Protocol(a protocol developed by a group of hardware and software manufacturers as a public standard for remotely exchanging management data with any computer device that implements the protocol.), a standard Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)-based, firewall-friendly protocol that allows hardware and operating systems, from different vendors, to interoperate. The WS-Management protocol specification provides a common way for systems to access and exchange management information across an IT infrastructure.

Everyday users need to set their env variables in xenapp apps

Issue: Users need to set their env variables for a citrix app every day. Brief Overview: For an application(xenapp published app), users have to set their enviornment variables for the very first time they login. From next time, these variables are automatically set from their profiles which are on the xenapp servers. A script has been set to reboot these servers every night by some other team person and from next morning, users have to set their variables again everyday.
